Workstations

Microplate assays consist of several biochemical steps which may take minutes to many hours to be performed. The steps can be: dispensing of different reagents, incubating, shaking, bound/free separation by several wash steps and reading.

Titertek-Berthold offers a unique workstation for the automation and processing of ELISA. The readerless version can be used for similar assays such as luminescence immunoassays (LIA/CLIA), hybridization assays and arrays in microplates.

ELISA (Enzyme-Linked ImmunoSorbent Assay) is probably the most widespread method that involves one or more steps of washing, dispensing, incubation, shaking and reading. The total duration of the assay can be of several hours and both the accurate timing of the incubation steps and the reproducibility of the washing process are very important for the consistency and reliability of the assay, making walk-away automation very desirable. Most instruments in the market offering ELISA automation are bulky equipment that requires frequent and expensive maintenance.
Our Crocodile Assay Workstations, on the other hand, are compact instruments (not much larger than an ELISA reader) that save valuable bench space in your laboratory and are very easy to set up and maintain.

But, besides ELISA, many other laboratory methods involving washing, dispensing, incubation and shaking can be automated using our workstations. In these assays, most steps are automatically performed by the Crocodile Assay Workstation and the final reading step is performed in a specialized reader:

Chemiluminescence immunoassays (CLIA) are very similar to an ELISA, but instead of measuring absorbance, luminescence is measured in a luminometer.
The approach is very similar for fluorescence immunoassays, but in this case fluorescence is measured in a fluorometer.
ELISpot also involve several washing, dispensing and incubation steps, which can also be automated. The spots are captured as a digital image using a special scanner or camera, and quantified using image analysis software.
Microarrays have been traditionally performed in slide format, but the always increasing throughput needs are pushing for a microplate format, thus allowing the automation of the liquid handling and incubation steps. A microarray scanner takes care of the image acquisition.

Our Crocodile Assay Workstations have been designed for low to medium throughput. If you need washing, or washing and dispensing, in large amounts of plates, you may be interested on our plate washers.
